How to play

Each day, one word appears in one of 77 languages, with its English meaning. You have six guesses to work out which language it came from.

Start typing a language and pick it from the list. Every wrong guess tells you how close you were, and unlocks a hint.

Hints arrive in a fixed order, each narrower than the last: where it's spoken, roughly how many speak it, its family, how many countries it's official in, and the country with the most speakers.

The daily puzzle

A new word at midnight UK time, the same one for everybody. Missed a few? The clock button opens past puzzles.

The words

Five hundred everyday words translated into 77 languages, with anything resembling the English filtered out — a word that gives itself away isn't much of a puzzle. Language facts come from Wikipedia, with speaker counts shown as ranges because nobody agrees on exact figures.
